Nine Suitcases

A documentary about the Yiddish Lilalo theater in Amsterdam

Nine Suitcases is a film about the life history of the Polish-Dutch variety artist Jossy Halland and the story behind the last Yiddish theater in Western Europe, the Lilalo theatre.

Looking for a poetic visual journey Ellen ten Damme to the origin of the songs and lyrics from the Lilalo theater, which Jossy and Jacques Halland set up in 1959 in Amsterdam after years of performing throughout Europe.

Inspired by the professional nomad Jossy and her wonderful history, their shared struggle to remain true to themselves and to hold on to language and music, Ellen Ten Damme is simultaneously working on a new repertoire.
