When the memory comes

When the Memory Comes is about the Jewish historian Saul Friedländer (1932, Prague) and his endeavor to describe the extermination of Europe's Jews without removing the primary sense of disbelief about it. This led to a new and unique form of historiography, which gave the victims, the spectators and the perpetrators alike a voice and a face. The film aims to be a portrait of a man, whose life and work is completely intertwined with the history of Europe and European Jewry – or, better still, in whose work and life this history is embodied.
